De 4C's
De 4 C's van een diamant zijn de vier belangrijkste kenmerken die de kwaliteit en waarde van een diamant bepalen: slijpvorm, karaatgewicht, kleur en helderheid. Samen worden deze vier kenmerken gebruikt om de kwaliteit en waarde van een diamant te beoordelen en worden ze meegenomen bij het bepalen van de prijs van een diamant.
Carat
Het gewicht van een diamant wordt uitgedrukt in karaat en punten (1 ct = 100 pt). 'Karaat' komt van 'Carob' zaden, die oorspronkelijk werden gebruikt vanwege hun constante gewicht in de natuur (1 ct = 0,2 g). Het karaat en de kleur zijn de factoren die uiteindelijk de prijs van de diamant het meest beïnvloeden.
Clarity
De helderheid is de mate waarin een edelsteen van interne onzuiverheden. Deze onzuiverheden worden waargenomen met een x10 vergrootglas ('loep') en beïnvloeden de uiteindelijke waarde van de diamant op verschillende manieren.
Color
Diamanten komen in de natuur in verschillende kleuren voor. Witte diamanten kunnen min of meer geel zijn en worden gecategoriseerd met een letter tussen D (algemeen bekend als 'River') en Z. De manier van naamgeving verschilt per certificeerder. Diamanten worden in elke kleur gevonden; de zeldzaamste kleuren worden geclassificeerd als Fancy-colored diamanten.
Cut
De slijpvorm is de vorm van de diamant. De slijpkwaliteit wordt bepaald door de slijpvorm en de kwaliteit van de symmetrie en polijsting. Een perfecte slijpvorm zorgt voor de beste schittering.
